AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore golfer Scott Fernandez is one of eight players representing Europe at the 2013 Palmer Cup, announced today by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The Ryder Cup-style event will be played June 7-9 at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Del.
The Palmer Cup began in 1997 when the legendary Arnold Palmer was approached by the Golf Coaches Association of America regarding lending his name to an international collegiate event featuring the best collegiate players between the United States and Europe.
The first Palmer Cup was held at the Bay Hill Club in Florida in 1997 and has included an impressive list of competitors such as: Luke Donald, Rory Sabbatini, Charles Howell, Ben Curtis, Lucas Glover, Graeme McDowell, Hunter Mahan, J.B. Holmes and Dustin Johnson.
A native of Granada, Spain, Fernandez is recording one of the finest seasons in Iowa State golf history. Fernandez has placed in the top-5 in seven of eight tournaments he's competed in for the Cyclones this season while compiling a 70.96 stroke average, a mark which is on pace to break school record.
The Ben Hogan Watch List member is ranked in the top-15 nationally and competed for the Spanish Team at the 2012 World Amateur.
Fernandez was the second pick for the European team under the Palmer Cup ranking system. TCU's Julien Brun was the top European pick and California's Michael Kim was the top United States pick.
