TEMPE, Ariz.- The Iowa State men's golf team is in third place after the first round of the Thunderbird Invitational this afternoon. ISU shot a 279 today, just one stroke behind second-place Iowa (278) and nine strokes off the pace of first-round leader Arizona State (271).
Arizona State's Jon Rahm fired a 62 in round one to lead the medalist race.
Fresh off his top-10 finish at the General Hackler Championship, junior All-American Scott Fernandez came out on fire this afternoon. The Granada, Spain native had four birdies and an eagle on his card to tie his career low with a 65. The eagle came on hole No. 17 and was the only one at the 581-yard par-5 all day.
Fernandez, who is currently in second place in the medalist race, is the only player in school history to card two career rounds of 65 or lower.
Freshman Nick Voke also had a strong day for the Cyclones. Voke shot a 2-under 69 to sit in a tie for eighth individually. It marks sixth sub-70 round Voke has recorded this season.
Sam Daley is tied for 36th after shooting a 72 today.
