COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Iowa State men's golf team is in eighth place after firing a 293 in the first round of the NCAA Columbia Regional this afternoon.
No. 2 Oklahoma State is the first-round leader at 272.
The Cyclones were led by junior All-American
Scott Fernandez, who is in a tie for 12th after carding an even-par 72 this afternoon. Fernandez shot a 4-under 32 on the front nine. After a brief weather delay, Fernandez dropped back to the field, but ended strong behind an eagle on the par-5, 15th.
Freshman
Ruben Sondjaja joins Fernandez in 12th place after posting an even-par 72. Sondjaja was 2-under in the last 12 holes.
Junior
Sam Daley is in a tie for 30th after firing a 74 and sophomore
Collin Foster shot a 75 to sit in a tie for 40th.
The Cyclones are playing without one of their top players in
Nick Voke, who was unable to compete after suffering an injury.
The top five teams and low individual not among the top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 23-28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. LSU currently occupies the final spot in fifth place, just four shots ahead of ISU at 289.
The second round is tomorrow with 18 holes, followed by the final 18 holes on Saturday.
