Hawkeye Invitational (Divers Only)

IOWA CITY, Iowa – After sending one diver to finals in each of the first two days of the Hawkeye Invitational, the Iowa State divers saw two qualify for finals in platform diving to round out the weekend Dec. 6 in Iowa City.
Overall, Iowa State earned six total top-10 finishes at the 2015 Hawkeye Invitational.
Junior Julie Dickinson earned her best finish of the weekend, taking sixth place on the night with a score of 214.55, improving her total from the prelim round by almost 25 points. Dickinson's mark topped her previous season-best platform score by over seven points.
The sixth-place result was the third top-10 finish of the weekend for Dickinson, who claimed tenth on the one-meter board and ninth on the three-meter board in the two previous days.
Just behind Dickinson was senior Elyse Brouillette, who scored 210.95 points to take seventh on the platform and up her prelim score by 2.95 points.
Brouillette finished the weekend a perfect 3-for-3 on appearances in finals after taking fourth and third on the one-meter and three-meter boards, respectively. The weekend marked the first time in Brouillette's standout career making finals all three days at the Hawkeye Invitational.
“I though overall what she did well was being consistent,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick. “Sometimes I tell them, 'Just get on your head,' to get them to relax and get vertical and that's what she did.”
Freshman Maggie James finished 12th on the platform, earning a score of 169.30 in the prelim round, less than three points from a top-10 finish. In just her second time competing on the platform in college, James improved by over 50 points from her previous outing.
“My overall impression is that I think we definitely, as a team, have areas we can improve on, but I'm starting to see those improvements,” Warrick said. “I saw that on platform finals today when I said, 'Here are some things we can improve on [from prelims],' and we saw them made.”
The weekend provided Warrick and the Cyclones peek ahead in their schedule to Dec. 11's Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series showdown in Ames.
“I think it maybe gets the sparks flying a little be more,” Warrick said of previewing the Iowa divers at this weekend's competition. “We have a good relationships with their divers – it's a healthy competition and rivalry. I think that helps get our divers more mentally prepared know we're going to host them in a dual at our pool this week.”
The Iowa State swimming and diving team returns to the pool for the aforementioned Cy-Hawk dual meet on Dec. 11 at Beyer Pool.
