AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf team started off the spring season at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz., tying for fourth in the 15-team field. The Cyclones had an excellent fall campaign, finishing second in two of three tournaments.
“I was pleased with the way they started off,” Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank said. “I always wish they could be better, but a lot of positives to draw from and I think the guys learned a lot about what they need to do to get over that hump. Overall, a very good start to our season.”
Senior Scott Fernandez and sophomore Nick Voke were crucial to the success in the spring season with each recording medalist honors in the first two tournaments. Fernandez added a top-10 finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate to bring his school record career total to 24.
“All the boys did a really good job there and it just shows that we are really excited to finish strong this season,” Fernandez said about ISU's start to the spring. “A lot of the boys have been going under technical changes in the offseason and this tournament just shows a little bit of the weaknesses. I went through a couple little changes and over the next three weeks I want to get comfortable with it and confident with it and there is always time to get sharper with the short game because that is where you get the scores.”
Sophomore Ruben Sondjaja currently holds the lowest stroke average for the season at 73.8 to go along with one top-five finish. Fernandez is right there with Sondjaja with a 73.9 stroke average, including two rounds in the 60s (66, 68) in the fall.
Senior Sam Daley is on his way to finish his Cyclone career as one of the best. He currently ranks sixth in career stroke average at 73.97. Fernandez holds the top spot for career stroke average with a 72.29.
The Cyclones will be looking for contributions from redshirt junior Collin Foster along with sophomore Jack Carter.
The Cyclones advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1953 last season. They want to go back again this year.
“With returning all five guys from last year's team that made it to the national championship, we certainly feel that we have the depth and the experience,” said Tank. “We got a taste of [the NCAA Championship] and we saw what we can accomplish. Our guys really want to get to the match play. Being able to watch that on the Golf Channel and seeing what that is all about is really something we have embraced.”
The spring schedule includes six more tournaments before heading to Tulsa, Okla., for the 2015 Big 12 Championships April 27-29.
