AMES, Iowa-Iowa State is set to face some of the nation's top competition this weekend at the 106th annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa in the state's premier track and field event. Many races include athletes who are ranked top-10 nationally in their respective events.
Action for the Cyclones kicks off on Thursday at 4 p.m. CT with Evelyne Guay competing in the women's 800-meter run. Highlighted events for the Cyclone on Thursday evening include the men's and women's 4x1600-meter relays, run at 4:40 p.m. and 5:05 p.m., respectively.
Field events initiate Saturday's action for the Cyclones with Jhoanmy Luque competing in the long jump at 10 a.m. CT. The Venezuelan will look to improve on her season best mark of 20-3.75. Luque ranks 24th nationally in the event.
Senior Christina Hillman is set for both the shot put and discus throw. Hillman ranks 19th nationally in the shot put and 57th in the discus. The senior will compete against several other competitors in the discus ranked among the top-50 in the event.
The men's 4x800-meter relay concludes action on Friday at 8:15 p.m. CT. The squad set a program record of 9:31.85 in the indoor season.
The Drake Relay's resume on Saturday morning with Anna Holtermann and Kayla Sanborn competing in the hammer throw. Both athletes rank in the Iowa State top-10 all-time performers with Sanborn coming in fourth after heaving a toss of 195-02 at the 2014 Big 12 Championships.
All-American Cameron Ostrowski will face rigorous competition in the high jump. Seven of the nation's top-20 ranked high jumpers will be competing in the event including the first, third and fourth ranked athletes.
At 10:40 a.m. Colleen Riley kicks off running events in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday for the Cyclones. Riley will look to reclaim her school record in the race that was broken earlier this season by teammate Abby Caldwell. Riley enters the race ranked 84th nationally with a time of 10:37.06 set at the Stanford Invitational. Five of her competitors rank top-100 nationally in the race.
The Cyclones conclude the meet with a trio of relays starting at 3:20 p.m. CT with the men's 4x100-meter relay, followed by the women's 4x400-meter relay at 3:45 p.m. CT and ending with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 3:52 p.m. CT.
