UGA Diving Invitational

ATHENS, Georgia – Senior Elyse Brouillette capped off Iowa State's trip to the UGA Diving Invitational with a top-10 finish Jan. 5 at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
The field for the platform diving competition was comprised of 37 divers from 12 of the 13 schools in attendance, with Iowa State as the lone Big 12 Conference member to compete.
“Not only is this a big field, but it's a very strong field as well,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick.
Brouillette earned 215.35 across her five dives in the prelim round to take ninth-place and finish within 4.5 points of her current season-high. The Omaha, Nebraska, native's top-10 placement is the Cyclones' first of the invitational.
Brouillette is now a perfect 3-for-3 on top-10 finishes in platform competition at diving invitationals in the 2015-16 season.
“I thought she did better each day and that was good to see,” Warrick said. “I was definitely very happy with how she finished today because I thought she really dove well. Overall there are still areas for improvement here and there, but that's certainly what we'll work on going forward.”
Junior Julie Dickinson, on the heels of a 14th-place finish on the three-meter board Jan. 4, tallied a score of 172.30 on the day to finish 27th.
“I thought she also did really well [this weekend],” Warrick said. “I thought yesterday on three-meter was her best day. She was within six points of making finals – I mean she was right there. She dove well today, too. She was great in the air, but we just need to clean up the entries a little bit.”
Overall, Warrick thinks the Cyclones' trip to Georgia was a test his team needed to face at this point in the season. In the eyes of the 18th-year coach of the Cyclones divers, Iowa State passed it with flying colors.
“This is something we needed – it's our most challenging invitational so far this year,” Warrick said. “Just the depth and talent of the field makes for a unique environment and that's what we needed to go through to be prepared for the Zone Championships later this year. This team has done the best of any of my teams at this winter training meet.”
The Iowa State swimming and diving team returns to action for two dual meets in as many days in Ames. The Cyclones will host Illinois at 4 p.m. Jan 15 and Washington-St. Louis at 1 p.m. Jan. 16. Both meets will take place at Beyer Pool and admission is free.
