AMES, Iowa – Former Cyclone star golfer Chris Baker will get his first taste of the “Big Show” in professional golf this weekend. The Web.com Tour player will play in his first PGA Tour event at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Baker fulfilled his dream by earning a spot in a Monday qualifier, which was extended to Tuesday morning because of a playoff. Baker carded a 66 at the Mayacoo Lakes Country Club and subsequently birdied the first playoff hole this morning to earn his spot at the PGA National Resort Champion Course beginning on Thursday.
A native of Brownstown, Indiana, Baker was warranted conditional status on the Web.com Tour by tying for 51st in the final stage of qualifying in December. The 29-year-old turned professional after his outstanding Cyclone career ended in 2008.
“It's pretty cool,” Baker told PGATour.com this morning. “My game is in pretty good shape, and I'm playing nice. It's the Honda. I've like the golf course and I played it at Q-School. It's going to be a fun week and a fun experience.”
Baker was an All-Big 12 and honorable mention All-American selection in his senior season (2007-08) at Iowa State after posting a then-school-record 71.66 stroke average. He qualified as an individual to the 2008 NCAA Regional and he shares the school record for low 18-hole round with a 64.
