Cyclones, Ieremia Lead After Day One At Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Iowa State men's golf team is in first place after a record-breaking first day at the Desert Shootout. The Cyclones carded a 551 after 36 holes to sit at 25-under par after the first day. Sophomore Denzel Ieremia also sits atop the leaderboard at 11-under par.
Iowa State used two of the best 18-hole rounds in school history to jump ahead of the field. Iowa State fired rounds of 276 and 275, respectively, which stand tied for the fifth-best and fourth-best 18-hole rounds in school history.
Ieremia began his career day fired a career-low 66 in the first round as he tallied six birdies and an eagle on a par-5 on the fifth hole. In the second round, Ieremia stepped up and again totaled six birdies and an eagle to finish the round at 67.
Nick Voke finished second for the Cyclones as he fired a 68 in the first round, his seventh sub-70 round on the season. Voke sits tied for 10th overall with a 140 36-hole total. Ruben Sondjaja also carded his first sub-70 round of the season with a 68 in the second round.
Iowa State is three strokes ahead of No. 41 Kansas, who sits in second place at 22-under.
The third and final round begins tomorrow morning.
