Iowa State Gets 12 Event Wins at Tulsa Duels

TULSA, Oklahoma – The Iowa State track and field team racked up 12 event wins to begin the 2016 outdoor season Saturday at the Tulsa Duels. The Cyclones saw impressive performances both on the track and in the field to begin the campaign outside.

The Cyclones were strong across the board, their most notable performance came from a freshman as Emma Whigham's second-place performance of 24.53 moved her into ninth in Iowa State history in the event. The performance was even more impressive in the context that Whigham competed in five events on the day as she prepares for a potential heptathlon later on in the season.

Among the note-worthy winners for Iowa State was Deon Sanders doing a double, as the senior sprinter claimed first in the 400-meter dash in 49.18 and as part of the 4x400-meter relay team. Derek Jones did the same, joining Sanders in the 4x400 and winning the 400-meter hurdles in 53.39.

On the women's side, Iowa State's school record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Abby Caldwell, began her outdoor campaign with an impressive victory in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 7:00.59. The Cyclone women's distance crew was impressive across the board, also picking up wins in the 800-meter run (Erinn Stenman-Fahey, 2:15.63), 1,500-meter run (Maryn Lowry, 4:37.23) and 3,000-meter run (Megan Schott, 10:37.12).
