AMES, Iowa – Former Cyclone Jack Webb, who was one of the most influential golfing figures in the state of Iowa, passed away Monday night. He was 92 years old.
Webb was a member of the Iowa State golf team in the late 1940s, helping the Cyclones earn a NCAA Finals berth in 1949.
Webb went onto a brilliant post-collegiate golfing career as an amateur and professional. As an amateur, he won two Iowa Amateur titles (1959 and 1960) and a Waterloo Open title in 1954.
Webb later turned professional in the 1960s where he was a club professional at the Wakonda Club and a teaching professional at the Des Moines Golf Country Club. He won two Iowa Section PGA Championships, 13 Iowa Section PGA Senior titles and competed in two PGA Championships (1970 at Southern Hills and 1971 at PGA National).
Webb also played in four U.S. Senior Open championships, making the cut twice.
Webb's son, Jim, was also a standout golfer for the Cyclones, competing in two NCAA Regionals in 1990 and 1991.
Webb was inducted into the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame in 1997.
