TEMPE, Ariz. – The Iowa State men's golf team did it again. Behind three top-11 performances, the Cyclones won their second-straight tournament by claiming the ASU Thunderbird Invitational by one shot over No. 13 California Sunday afternoon.
Iowa State, which held the 36-hole lead, fired a final-round 282 today to hold on to its second team victory in as many tries. The Cyclones ended the tournament with a three-round 832 tally, the second-lowest 54-hole team score in school history.
ISU, which won Desert Shootout two weeks ago, was one shot better than California (833) and edged No. 22 San Diego State by three shots (835). No. 5 Arizona State was fourth at 836.
Nick Voke darted up the leaderboard this afternoon after posting a final-round 65, going 6-under in his final 15 holes. Voke was runner-up in the medalist race by breaking ISU's 54-hole school mark at 201, earning his fifth top-10 of the season and 13th of his career along the way. Voke was in the 60s for all three rounds (68-68-65) this weekend and is averaging 68.0 strokes in his last six rounds dating back to the Desert Shootout.
Sophomore Denzel Ieremia recorded his second-straight top-10 finish by placing sixth at 205. Ieremia posted a first-round 64 to tie ISU's 18-hole scoring mark.
Ruben Sondjaja also had a solid tournament for the Cyclones, tying for 11th at 211.
Next up for the Cyclones is the Hawkeye Invitational, April 16-17.
