Distance Squad Gets ISU On Board at Big 12 Champs.
05.13.2016 | Track and Field
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Iowa State track and field programs were able to post team points on day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex. The Cyclones scored in the men's and women's 10,000-meter run, highlighted by Erin Hooker's fourth-place effort in the women's 10K.
After one day, the Iowa State women are in a three-way tie for fourth place with eight team points after two events. Through four events of the men's team competition, Iowa State is eighth with two points.
ISU has put itself in strong position to put more points on the board Saturday, as Taylor Sanderson is the leader at the halfway point of the men's decathlon, and the Cyclone women have two of the top-six in the women's heptathlon competition.
The Iowa State women got on the team points scoreboard via the 10,000-meter run. Erin Hooker showed a big improvement from her freshman season, taking fourth in the 10K in 35:09.25. At last season's Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Ames, Hooker just snuck into the scoring positions in eighth. The Fort Collins, Colorado native was among the leaders the entire time. The freshman Anne Frisbie was strong in her second career 10,000, working the middle of the field and maintaining position to score the Cyclones three team points via a sixth-place finish in 35:40.06.
The Cyclone men got their first two points of the conference championships thanks to Daniel Everett. In his Big 12 Outdoor Championships debut, the 2016 Indoor All-American made his first collegiate appearance in the 10,000 and finished seventh in 31:02.42.
Sanderson had a solid day of work, and was able to do enough to build a 178-point lead over second place heading into tomorrow's five events. Sanderson kicked off the day with a wind-aided 10.93 in the 100-meter dash, his best 100 regardless of wind conditions. The redshirt senior showed off his determination in the high jump competition, twice having to convert third-try opportunities at 6-2 3/4 and 6-4 to gain 53 potentially crucial points.
His teammate, Wyatt Rhoads, kept himself within range of scoring points for ISU, as he is 82 points out of eighth place. Rhoads posted a personal best in the shot put (35-8 1/2), and tied his best in the high jump (5-8 3/4).
Iowa State's heptathletes were outstanding on the first day of competition, with Kaci Storm and Emma Whigham combining to record seven outright PRs out of a possible eight, with the eighth being a tied personal best. Storm sits fifth after day one at 3,104 points, 211 points better than her previous heptathlon day one best she set at the Drake Relays. Getting personal bests in all four events, Storm can hang her hat on an outstanding effort in the shot put, with her 38-6 being over three-and-a-half feet further than her previous best.
Whigham is in sixth at 3,058 points, with her highlight coming via the 200-meter dash. The freshman moved into fifth in Iowa State program history with a 24.09 to finish first among the heptathletes.
