FORT WORTH, Texas – The Iowa State track and field teams finished the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships with some strong performances, and high placings on the podium. The Cyclones' Sunday at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex saw them earn a silver medal from Daniel Everett in the men's 5,000-meter run and a trio of bronze medals via Kelly Naumann in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Derek Jones in the men's 400-meter hurdles and Jhoanmy Luque in the women's triple jump.
In the team standings, the Iowa State women finished in seventh with 57 points, while the Cyclone men took eighth with 59 points.
Iowa State had a clear strategy prepared to make a run at the Big 12 5,000-meter run crown. Greyson Dolezal and Dan Curts did the pacing, with Dolezal running from the front for the first mile, and Curts taking over until roughly 2,000 to go. After that, it was left to Everett and Nathan Rodriguez to take care of business. Oklahoma State's Cerake Geberkidane was able to pull away in the final 800, but Everett was able to negotiate the lapped traffic to come home in second in 14:04.95. Rodriguez also scored for ISU in fifth in 14:07.94.
Kelly Naumann's journey into the world of the steeplechase added another mystifying chapter on Sunday. Just two weeks after dropping 21-seconds off her personal best at the Drake Relays, Naumann used the best finish of her young career to run her way to the bronze medal. Her time of 10:26.95 was nearly 10 seconds faster than her mark in the Drake Relays a fortnight ago.
Derek Jones did well to bounce back from a slow first quarter of the race to get back into contention in the men's 400-meter hurdles. The junior was strong in the corner, turning off the backstretch in fifth, but moving up to third coming home, he did well to start reeling in Texas Tech's JW Smith, but ran out of real estate and settled for the bronze medal in third at 51.60.
A day after taking second in the long jump, Jhoanmy Luque was back among the contenders of the women's triple jump. The Venezuelan was among the top-three during the entirety of the competition, and was able to hang on to a fourth-place finish with a best leap of 42-8, not for off from her career-best 42-11 3/4 she set at LSU four weeks ago.
