TUCSON, Ariz. – The Iowa State men's golf team captured its second tournament title of the season by winning the National Invitation Tournament with a 54-hole score of 832 (32-under) this afternoon.
The Cyclones went wire-to-wire, holding off UNLV and Arizona State, who finished tied for second at 837. ISU shot a 283 this afternoon behind scores of 69 (Denzel Ieremia), 69 (Nick Voke), 71 (Tripp Kinney) and 74 (Sam Vincent). Of the 12 counting scores in the tournament for the Cyclones, eight were sub-70 rounds.
ISU's 832 score ties for the second-best 54-hole tally in school history.
"This is a really special win for the program," Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank said. "Our guys have been putting in a lot of work and it's great to see it pay off. We had a poor start to the spring after a successful fall. The kids stepped up this week and they have been working harder. To go wire to wire is very rewarding. It says a lot about the guys on our team. With our starting five, you never know who is going to be the guy to go low. We feel everyone is capable of shooting in the 60s. That's what you need to compete at this level."
Senior Nick Voke carded his third-straight round in the 60s this afternoon with a birdie on the final hole to shoot 69. He tied for second in the medalist race, his 16th career top-10 finish, at 203 (66-68-69). Voke's 203 tied for the third-lowest 54-hole score in school history.
Denzel Ieremia joined Voke in the top-10 by tying for fourth at 204, posting three consecutive rounds in the 60s at 68-67-69. Ieremia, who has finished in the top-10 in four of seven tournaments this season, tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in school history.
Freshman Tripp Kinney also had a solid tournament, tying for 13th with a career-best 212.
Iowa State is back in action at the General Hackler Tournament, March 11-12.
