AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State booked its first two tickets for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday night at the NCAA West Preliminaries as Jhoanmy Luque and Allanah McCorkle advanced out in the women's long jump competition. Luque, who is making her third-straight trip to Eugene, Oregon, finished third with a best leap of 21-9(w), while McCorkle advanced to her first career NCAA Championship via a 10th-place finish at 20-8 1/2(w). Luque's day also saw her set the school record and Venezuelan national record in the outdoor long jump with a wind-legal jump of 21-7 1/4.
This marks the third time in women's program history that ISU has qualified two student-athletes in the same field event for the final round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Hayli Bozarth and Danielle Frere both made it in the shot put in 2012, and Lisa Griebel and Kris Curnyn made it together in the shot put in 1998.
Both Luque and McCorkle ensured right away they would be headed to Eugene. Luque's first jump of 21-7 1/4 was a legal jump that saw her take down the previous school record of 21-1 1/2 set by Trina Radske in 1998. On that jump she also recorded a new national record for her home country Venezuela, with her 21-7 1/4 (6.58m) edging Yulimar Rojas' 21-6 3/4 (6.57m) mark set at the Venezuelan National Championships in 2015.
Meanwhile, McCorkle got her best leap of 20-8 1/2 on her first attempt, a personal best and moving her to No. 3 in ISU history. Luque recovered from a second-jump foul to post a wind-aided 21-9 on her third and final try, bringing her up to third. McCorkle sat on her first jump, more than enough to ensure her trip to Eugene.
Meanwhile on the track, the Cyclones advanced four runners onto further rounds on Friday and Saturday. Jasmine Staebler was paired with Oregon's four-time national champion Raevyn Rogers in her heat of the women's 800-meter run, with the Duck controlling the heat from the start. However, the Cyclone sophomore was able to follow along to automatically advance via a second place finish in 2:07.09, the second-fastest time of the evening behind UO's Rogers.
Also advancing in the 800 was Roshon Roomes on the men's side, as the ISU freshman finished third in his heat and 15th overall on the day in 1:50.85.
In the fastest heat of the men's 1,500, Christian DeLago was able to position himself well to finish strong and finish fifth in 3:50.43 to automatically qualify for the quarterfinals. The pace of the heat was demonstrated in the final results, as despite running fifth in his heat, DeLago ran the fifth-fastest time of the 48 men in the 1,500.
Derek Jones also earned a second run tomorrow, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 51.77, 15th overall on the day. Jones was fourth in his heat, meaning he had to wait out whether he would advance on time, but he eased in as the second-fastest of the six time qualifiers.
