Cyclones Wrap Up Day One At NCAA Championship

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Iowa State men's golf team fired a first-round 293 at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship this afternoon at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

The afternoon wave of tee times were unable to finish their rounds due to heavy rain in the area. Those teams will finish their remaining holes tomorrow morning before the start of the second round. Of the 15 teams to get all 18 holes in, the Cyclones are tied for seventh.

The Cyclones were led by true freshman Sam Vincent, who fired an even-par 72. Vincent closed out his round 2-under in his last six holes behind a pair of birdies.

Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank was pleased with his rookie's performance.

"That's a great round for Sam," Tank said. "He was really solid for a freshman playing in his first NCAA Championship. Shooting even-par on this golf course is a very good round."

Junior Denzel Ieremia was one stroke back of Vincent after posting a 1-over 73. Ieremia got hot on his first nine, finishing with birdies on holes 17 and 18.

The 490-yard, par-four No. 17 was without a doubt the toughest hole on the course. Ieremia, along with teammate Ruben Sondjaja, were among the few who recorded birdies on the hole.

Another true freshman, Tripp Kinney, posted a 1-over 73. He had three birdies on his card this morning.

"It was a lot of fun out there and we got off to a great start," Tank said. "I saw a lot of great things from the guys and I feel like we put ourselves in a good position with a lot of golf left the next two days."

The first cut is after 54 holes when the top-15 teams will advance to the fourth round of stroke play on Monday. Rounds two and three will take place on Saturday and Sunday.
