AMES, Iowa – With the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships only a week away, a group of Cyclones will take part in final tune ups this weekend. On Friday, Cyclone freshman Zach Black will run at the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford, while on Saturday there will be a group of Cyclones at the Nebraska Invitational.
Black will run in Section 3 of the 1,500-meter run at Stanford on Friday, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. Central Time. The meet will be shown live on FloTrack via its subscription-based FloPro service, here. Live results at Stanford will be provided by Record Timing, here. Meanwhile in Lincoln, field events begin at 11 a.m., with track events starting at 3 p.m. There will be no live video of the competition at Nebraska, while live results will be offered by Delta Timing, here.
For Black, this weekend is all about putting himself in position for qualification for the NCAA West Preliminaries. The freshman has had a strong freshman season, but will need to find some more time to try and work his way into the top-48. As of publication, 48th place in the West Region is a 3:45.48, while Black's career-best time is a 3:48.75 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 14. He will have his opportunity, as the Payton Jordan Invite is consistently among the fastest meets in the country each season.
At Nebraska, there are a variety of student-athletes who are at different points of their seasons with different goals. At the Drake Relays last weekend, Jalen Ford had one of the best days of his career, tying a career-best at 6-11 1/2 in the high jump, while making two strong efforts at 7-1. Another notable ISU men's entrant is Derek Jones, who returned to the ISU lineup last week after sitting out a few weeks with a calf strain. Jones is currently No. 45 in the West Region in the 400-meter hurdles, and will be looking to make his West Prelims spot a little more secure.
On the women's side, Allanah McCorkle's spot in the West Prelims for the long jump is probably secure, with her 20-1 1/2 at Stanford last month still holding her 32nd in the region. However, she will look to push towards a new PR. The Cyclones will have a trio of women's hammer throwers in action Ariana Kuhn is in good shape at No. 27 in the West Region, but Christabel Okeke will be looking to move her way up from No. 57 and her career-best 181-10.
