DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State's track and field program racked up a pair of victory flags on Saturday at the Drake Relays.
Jhoanmy Luque completed her "double-double" by repeating in the women's triple jump with a personal best, and the men's sprint medley relay team of
Logan Schneider,
Ka'ven Berry,
Jaymes Dennison and
Roshon Roomes edged out in-state rival Iowa for the second time in as many days.
Combining ISU's wins in the 4x800 and sprint medley relay and a second place finish in the distance medley relay, Iowa State finished second in the HyVee Cup standings with 28 points.
Luque's title defense got better with each attempt. She fell to second after the second round when Iowa's Jahisha Thomas pushed ahead with a 43-8 1/2 (13.32m) at the end of the second round. Luque, who was leading off the competition, bounced back the next jump to get ahead for good at 44-8 (13.61m). Her fifth jump was a season-best via a wind-aided 44-9 3/4 (13.66m), and then she finished with a bang, posting a personal best 44-11 (13.69m) for her winning mark.
Yesterday's miss of the 4x400 final allowed the Cyclones to load up the sprint medley relay. After
Logan Schneider and
Ka'ven Berry took care of the 200 carries,
Jaymes Dennison had a critical split in the 400 leg, making the cut in front of Illinois to help create a two-horse race between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes.
Roshon Roomes ran on the shoulder of Iowa's Tysen VanDraska for the first 650, going around VanDraska in the corner and holding off a late inside move to hold onto the win. This is the first time the Cyclones have won the men's sprint medley relay.
The men's distance medley relay performed admirably, with
Festus Lagat and
Eric Fogltanz stretching Iowa State ahead in the first two legs, and
Frank Hayes keeping ISU ahead of Tulsa heading into the anchor of
Edwin Kurgat. While Kurgat was strong, clocking a 4:05.07, he was unable to keep Tulsa's Mark Middleton at bay, as he passed Kurgat on the homestretch to beat the Cyclones by 0.20 seconds, with ISU finishing in 9:42.95, the No. 10 mark in ISU history.
The women's distance medley relay was able to rally to claim third. The Cyclones were fifth after
Karly Ackley's first leg, but were in the battle for second after a strong carry from
Emma Whigham.
Erinn Stenman-Fahey had the Cyclones in the battle for the win when she handed off to
Jasmine Staebler. Missouri's national champ Karissa Schweitzer was able to pull the Tigers ahead for the win, with Staebler just missing out on reeling in Indiana State for second, with the Cyclones' 11:19.26 taking third and No. 3 in ISU history for the event.
