POLK CITY, Iowa – Iowa State junior golfer Tripp Kinney became the program's ninth Iowa Amateur champion this afternoon.
Kinney defeated Trevor Ullestad in a playoff at Tournament Club of Iowa with a birdie on the third extra hole to claim the 2018 Iowa Amateur championship.
The First Team Academic All-Big 12 member fired rounds of 72-67-71 for a three day total of 210 (-3).
Down the stretch in the final round, Kinney battled it out with playing partner Ullestad. Heading into the 17th, Kinney held a one-shot advantage. An eagle for Ullestad and a birdie for Kinney brought the two all square. A pair of pars sent the championship to extra holes.
Heading into the final round, Kinney shared the 36-hole lead with Ullestad. During Tuesday's second round, Kinney torched TCI with a 4-under 67. He remained unscathed throughout the day, tallying four birdies and no bogeys. His mark of 67 tied for the lowest 18-hole score of the tournament.
The Iowa Amateur was just one stop on Kinney's tour this summer. The Waukee, Iowa native played in the Trans-Miss Amateur, the North-South Amateur and finished fifth at the Southwest Amateur.
Kinney was an intricate part of ISU's success in 2017-18. The squad made its third trip to the NCAA Golf Championships in the last five seasons. Kinney's season stroke average of 73.68 was third on the team.
