AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (5-3, 1-0 Big 12) beat the Northern Iowa Panthers (10-2, 1-0 MVC) 179-121 on Saturday afternoon. Dana Liva and Sydney Ronald took first and second in both diving events to secure the win.
The Cyclones secured another 200 medley victory to begin the meet, their seventh medley relay win of the season. Emily Haan, Martha Haas, Elynn Tan and Evan Hundley teamed up for a 1:44.25 in the event. Haley Ruegemer got in a battle with UNI's Kylie Engstrom during the 1000 free, but lost by under .2 seconds with a 10:25.47. Iowa State swept the 200 free with Anna Andersen, Polina Shynkarenko and Emma Ruehle all scoring.
Haan (57.10) and Haas (1:05.67) each claimed a second-place finish in the 100 back and breast, respectively. Iowa State also took third and fourth in those events. Lucia Rizzo won the 200 fly in 2:09.16 and Tan the 50 free at 23.92 to give Iowa State an 82-49 lead going into the first diving break.
Haan and Thorson earned runner-up finishes in the 200 back (2:07.36) and 200 breast (2:23.12) out of the break. Ruegemer changed some of her turns in the 500 free, which helped her win the 500 free at 5:05.79, with Rizzo just behind her in second at 5:06.59. In the 100 fly, Iowa State again used their depth to take second through fourth. Tan led the way with a 58.03
"I'm very pleased with how our women performed," head coach Duane Sorenson. "They have some really outstanding individuals, but we had to take care of business in races we could win."
In the diving well, Dana Liva won both springboard competitions. She posted her best score this season of 282.40 on the one-meter and just under her season-best at 294.90 on the three-meter. Sydney Ronald came in second in both competitions with a 264.60 and 291.85, respectively. On the one-meter, Alex Aaberg (230.05) and Jessica Coffin (186.90) both set PRs.
DIVER OF THE MEET
Liva stepped up in a big way winning both diving events. Both performances were near or above her season-best scores and earned 18 points in the victory.
"I felt like training trip gave us a culmination of everything," Liva said. "I was really happy with how high my scores were on both one-meter and three-meter. I didn't have the chance to have a lot of anxiety which helped me focus on the things I have been working on."
