TOPEKA, Kan. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-2, 0-0 Big 12) ends the second day of competition in second-place behind Kansas. Taking both days into account, Keely Soellner is the top scorer for Iowa State with 30 points. Freshman Nolwenn Nunes and Sophia Goushchina added 19 points each for the Cyclones.
PRELIMS
Fourteen top-16 times were posted in the second day of competition's prelims. Two additional swims timed in just outside. Wyli Erlechman's 100 fly time of 57.04 claimed 17th place, a mere .02 seconds behind Lucia Rizzo's 57.02. In the 100 back, .05 seconds separated Jazlyn Horras from the scoring finals.
FINALS
The 200 medley relay was the first event of the night, with Iowa State's top team of Emily Haan, Martha Haas, Elynn Tan and Anna Andersen combining for a time of 1:42.47 for a fourth-place finish. The event brought the Cyclones within 149 points from Kansas.
The 400 IM provided three top-16 placings coming from Lucia Rizzo (4:29.14), Kami Pankratz (4:31.17) and Emily Heymans (4:35.86). Rizzo placed seventh, Pankratz placed 13th and Heymans placed 16th.
Tan claimed seventh in the 100 fly finals with her time of 55.74, while Wyli Erlechman took 13th to improve her prelims time with a 56.26.
Four Cyclones sat within the top 16 in the 200 free finals. Soellner secured the top Cyclone time, clocking in at 1:50.80. Following the 200 free, the Cyclones trailed the Jayhawks by 307.5 points.
Haas and Lehr Thorson touched within .43 seconds of each other in the 100 breast. Haas came in fifth with a time of 1:03.21 and Thorson came in seventh with 1:03.64.
All Cyclones improved their 100 back time from prelims and three finished in the top ten. Goushchina (55.82) claimed sixth, Elizabeth Richardson (56.42) claimed ninth and Haan (56.70) claimed 10th.
The 800 free relay wrapped up day two of competition. The team of Soellner, Ruehle, Andersen and Nunes finished strong with a time of 7:28.29, good for third overall.
"Tonight's session went very well," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "We did not swim up to our capabilities in prelims, we were just a little flat. I challenged the team to come back and pick up the pace and they did a really good job."
The third and final day of the Kansas Classic begins tomorrow with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 2:30 p.m.
