TEMPE, Arizona – Big performances by the Iowa State track and field team highlighted the Saturday competition at the Sun Angel Classic.
During the afternoon session, Keiara Christie-Galloway took down the women's 100-meter hurdles record for the second time in as many weekends, while the evening session saw Festus Lagat and Roshon Roomes post the two fastest times in the 800-meter run in NCAA Division I this season.
The key to the massive performances from Lagat and Roomes at the start was Nate Kennedy, who took the field out in 50.6 before stepping off the track, with Roomes in second and Lagat in fifth. Roomes took the lead with 200 to go and had clear space heading into the final 100. However, Lagat had the kick to pull marginally ahead and take the win over his Cyclone teammate. Lagat and Roomes finished first and second, respectively, with matching 1:47.14s. The duo now rank at No. 3 and No. 4 in ISU history for the event, and are No. 1 and No. 2 in NCAA Division I for the 2019 outdoor season.
Christie-Galloway knocked off the school record in the first heat, clocking in first in 13.25 and putting up a time the field could not catch in the remaining heats. Her time cuts 0.03 off her previous record of 13.28 set last weekend at Stanford. Kaylyn Hall tied her legal-personal best to finish sixth in 13.84. Christie-Galloway and Katarina Vlahovic had a quick turnaround, coming back within the hour to run the first two legs of the second-place 4x100m relay with Erika Furbeck and Sydney Milani in 46.59. The team is No. 10 in ISU history for the event, the program's first top-10 entry in the 4x1 since 2010.
Logan Schneider notched a personal best in the men's 110-meter hurdles, finishing sixth overall in 14.00. His previous personal best was 14.06 with an all-conditions PR of 14.02. The time moves Schneider up to a tie for sixth in school history with Danny Harris in the event. Later in the men's 400m hurdles, ISU had two of the top-four as Eric Fogltanz took third in 51.66, while Mason Weh notched a personal best to take fourth in 52.02.
A couple other notable 800-meter run performances included Erinn Stenman-Fahey recording a new personal best in the women's premiere event, finishing seventh in 2:05.42. Also in the men's 800-meter premiere, Cebastian Gentil notched a new personal best in 1:51.04 to take 10th place.
In the field, Keiara Williams set a new personal best in the shot put, as her 49-5 1/2 (15.07m) was good for sixth place and moved her up to No. 8 in ISU history.
