AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's golf team begins its 2019-20 season on Sunday (Sept. 8-10) at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis.
The Cyclones have qualified for NCAA Regional competition as a team or individual in each of the last eight seasons. In five of those years, a Cyclone team or individual advanced to the NCAA Championship (Team: 2014, 2017, 2018; Individual: 2012, 2019).
The Cyclones ended last season ranked 36th nationally by Golfweek, and with all eight golfers returning to the roster, they received votes in the preseason Golfweek poll.
A pair of seniors, Tripp Kinney and Sam Vincent, and a trio of juniors, Lachlan Barker, Ricky Costello, and Frank Lindwall, headline this team.
Kinney ended his junior campaign strong by winning the NCAA Louisville Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championship as an individual. He tied for 47th and became the first Cyclone to have competed in three NCAA Championships.
His impressive post-season play was only part of his fantastic junior season. He set the school record for season stroke average (71.08), 28 of his 37 rounds were at or below par, and he finished in the top-10 six times.
Based on his impressive junior season, Golfweek named Kinney a Preseason Third Team All-American headed into the season.
Vincent finished last season with a 72.82 stroke average. He set new personal marks for low 18-hole score (65) and low-54 hole score (207).
Barker has one of the most impressive resumes through his first two seasons wearing the Cardinal and Gold. He completed his sophomore season with the second-best single-season stroke average in school history (71.15). In his first year, Barker set the school record for lowest stroke average by a freshman (72.14). His career stroke average of 71.66 is on pace to set the school record.
This will be the fourth consecutive season the Cyclones will open their season in Madison, Wis., at the Badger Invitational.
