IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State wrapped up competition for the weekend on Saturday at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. The UI Recreation Building saw some strong Cyclone performances, with two notable stars of the season so far stepping up in Festus Lagat for the No. 11 ISU men and Katarina Vlahovic for the Cyclone women.
With many of the nation's top milers going at it across the country, Lagat was able to put his name up among them with Saturday's performance. As he usually does, the senior had a strong finish, clocking his final lap in 28.42. However, he was unable to reel in Arizona's Carlos Villarreal, who finished in 27.61 to take the win. At the time of publication, Lagat's 4:02.56 ranks at No. 7 in NCAA Division I this season.
In the men's 3,000-meter premier, Thomas Pollard got his season off to a strong start, running to a personal best 8:11.03 to finish in third place.
Iowa State enjoyed some highlights in the women's sprints and hurdles. In the 60-meter hurdles, Katarina Vlahovic continued her fantastic start to the season, recording a personal best of 8.41 to finish third on Saturday. Vlahovic dropped 0.05 seconds off her personal best of 8.46 she ran last month in Iowa City.
In the women's 400-meter dash, Zakiyah Amos took second in 55.42, a time that moved her up to No. 7 in Iowa State history for the event.
