AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team completed the Cyclone Championship this week. The competition was marked by taking down two pool records while 11 lifetime bests were posted.
"Because so many Midwest schools have been limited in racing this fall, this week we simulated a three-day championship prelims and finals format with the team at Beyer Hall," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "With two officials refereeing each session and while wearing tech suits, we tried to create an atmosphere for tremendous performances."
The highlight of the first night of finals was trimming the 400 medley relay pool record down by 2.17 seconds. Emily Haan, Martha Haas, Trinity Gilbert and Ashley Bengtson combined for a time of 3:46.50. The record was previously set in 2007 by Texas A&M.
On the second night of finals, Lucia Rizzo cut the 30-year-old 400 IM pool record by 4.19 seconds to post a personal-record time of 4:20.73. Rizzo improved her prelims by 6.89 seconds.
Newcomers topped the 500 free, as Brinley Horras (4:54.54), Sydney Jackson (4:58.03) and Keely Tierney (5:10.25) placed first, second and fourth.
The trio also went on to place first through third in the 1000 free. Jackson took first with 10:07.37, Brinley Horras second with 10:16.97 and Tierney third with 10:38.75.
Sophia Goushchina closed in on her 100 free PR, coming within .52 seconds of it. Goushchina touched first in the event with a time of 51.52.
Lehr Thorson claimed both breaststroke titles, timing in at 1:02.58 in the 100 breast and 2:18.38 in the 200 breast. Haas took second in both events with 1:03.72 in the 100 and 2:19.45 in the 200.
In butterfly events, senior-captain Wyli Erlechman won the 100 fly with a time of 55.86, .03 off her PR time set at last season's Big 12 Championship. Rizzo won the 200 fly as she touched the wall at 2:03.82.
Haan took possession of both backstroke titles with times of 55.96 in the 100 back and 2:01.17 in the 200 back. Goushchina placed second in the 100 back with 56.15 and Elizabeth Richardson took second in the 200 back with 2:03.17.
In one-meter diving, Jayna Misra surpassed her previous PR by 24.35 points to cement a Zone-qualifying score of 307.85. The score also brought the sophomore within 14.37 points of the school record. Freshman Joscelyn Buss grabbed second with a score of 238.30.
On the three-meter, Michelle Schlossmacher Smith grabbed a Zone-qualifying mark with 299.95. Misra placed second with a final score of 297.25, also a Zone cut.
Schlossmacher Smith solidified a new PR on the platform with 228.25. The score is the junior's first Zone cut of her career on the platform.
"Our women responded to the challenge and had a great meet," Sorenson said. "All of the swims and dives were season bests and there were numerous personal-best scores and times, with two Beyer Hall pool records. Overall, we got out of the meet what we wanted; fast swimming, great diving, racing hard in both the morning and afternoon sessions and relearning how a three-day meet runs. I'm looking forward to see how our women will compete after winter break against other schools. I feel this meet will set our women up for success in the second half of our season."
