OMAHA, Neb. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (1-0) picked up their season-opening victory against the Omaha Mavericks (2-2, 0-0 Summit), 187-79 Saturday afternoon. Newcomers set the tone as they cemented six event victories, while the Cyclones went on to win all events.
Off to a hot start, the 200 medley relay team of Emily Haan, Martha Haas, Wyli Erlechman and Andie Quirke grabbed the first title of the meet with the time of 1:47.77.
The win streak continued, as freshman grabbed their first collegiate victories. Sydney Jackson set a dominating time in the 1000 free to take first with 10:33.25. Fellow freshman Brinley Horras and Ashley Bengtson grabbed first and second in the 200 free with times of 1:54.56 and 1:55.30.
Horras went on to capture another event win in the 500 free, touching at 5:04.08, over 10 seconds before the second-place finisher.
The Iowa State victories kept coming, as Lucia Rizzo claimed the lone time under a minute with 58.54 in the 100 fly. Trinity Gilbert touched next with 1:00.70.
Haan solidified multiple backstroke wins, as she posted 27.13 in the 50 back and 58.46 in the 100 back.
In diving, Michelle Schlossmacher Smith claimed first on the three-meter with her score of 277.13. Joscelyn Buss came in third with 222.75.
On the one-meter, Schlossmacher Smith again came in first with 286.35. The score brings her Zone-qualifying score season total to four.
The dual was capped off with the 400 freestyle relay, where the Iowa State team of Haas, Kennedy Tranel, Bengtson and Sophia Goushchina brought in the win.
"I was pleased with the way our women raced today," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "It was fun to see a couple of our newcomers win their first dual meet individual races. All in all, it was a solid win for the Cyclones."
