AMES, Iowa – Track is back, with the Iowa State track and field program begins its indoor season this weekend. Meanwhile out in California, a couple of Iowa State's top student-athletes will be aiming for fast times to meet crucial standards.
ISU's indoor track and field season begins Saturday at the K-State Winter Invitational, hosted by Kansas State. A group of Cyclone sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers will be taking to Ahearn Field House this Saturday, with field competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m. There will be no live video, while Heartland Timing will provide live results, here.
Meanwhile, Big 12 cross country champions Wesley Kiptoo and Cailie Logue will be looking for fast times at The Track Meet, hosted by Sound Running in Southern California. Both will be competing in the fast section of the 10,000-meter run on Saturday night. Logue's section goes off at 10:45 p.m. Central, while Kiptoo runs at 11:25 p.m. Central. Video coverage will be provided by subscription-based USATF.TV and RunnerSpace+, here. Live results will be offered by Finished Results, here.
A group of 14 student-athletes are making their way to Manhattan for this weekend's indoor season opener. The Cyclone women's hurdlers will feature prominently, with exciting competitors among both the returnees and newcomers. 2020 Big 12 Indoor in the 60m hurdles Katarina Vlahovic and Kaylyn Hall are both entered, Vlahovic earned bronze at the conference championships last year in 8.30, while Hall ran her PR 8.37 in the prelims.
Among the newcomer entries are Tatiana Aholou and Kendra Leger. Aholou, a transfer from Kentucky, owns a PR of 8.41 in the 60m hurdles, and was a junior was the New Balance Indoors national champ in the long jump and silver medalist in the 60m dash. Leger represented Canada at the 2019 U20 World Championships in the 100m hurdles and owns a PR of 8.24 in the 60m hurdles.
The Cyclone men have only three student-athletes entered to compete this weekend. One notable entry is the return of Charlie Johnson. An All-American during the 2019 outdoor season in the 4x400-meter relay, Johnson saw his indoor season cut short via a knee injury at the Iowa State Classic.
Out in California, the goal for ISU's two star distance runners is qualifying standards. For Kiptoo, who will be making his track debut while wearing Cardinal & Gold and is the only collegian in his section, the goal will be the Olympic Qualifying standard at 10,000m of 27:28. The Kenyan Olympic Trials will take place in Eldoret from June 19-21. For Logue, the goal is the U.S. Olympic Trials standard of 32:25, with the Olympic Trials taking place June 18-27 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
They will have plenty of help getting those fast times. Among the entries on the men's side is former Cyclone All-American and 2016 Olympian Hilary Bor, 2016 Olympian Leonard Korir (the only man in the field who has achieved the 27:28 standard) and a host of former NCAA stars, including Edward Cheserek, Eric Jenkins, Patrick Tiernan, Joe Klecker and Tyler Day. Logue's section includes the 2016 Olympic triathlon champion Gwen Jorgensen, 2019 NCAA XC champ Weini Kelati and Kellyn Taylor, who finished fourth in the 10K at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.
