AMES, Iowa – Iowa State golfing standouts Tripp Kinney and Lachlan Barker will participate in the 120th United States Amateur, August 10-16 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon.
Because of the outbreak of COVID-19, local qualifying was cancelled this season. Both Kinney and Barker were able to secure bids by being ranked in the top-225 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). Kinney is ranked No. 68 and Barker is No. 185.
All competitors will play 36 holes of stroke play on Aug. 10-11. The top 64 players will advance to the match play portion of the tournament beginning on Aug. 12.
A native of Waukee, Iowa, Kinney was a Ping All-Central Region pick for the second season in a row after setting the school single-season stroke average mark of 70.89. Kinney, who ended the season ranked 68th nationally by Golfstat, qualified as an individual to the 2019 NCAA Championships, tying for 47th.
Barker, who hails Willunga, Australia, was second on the team in stroke average in 2019-20 at 71.94. He has 10 top-10 performances in his career and owns the best career stroke average in school history at 71.72.
The duo will also compete at the prestigious Western Amateur, July 27-Aug. 1 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
