TOPEKA, Kan. – Iowa State swimmers concluded the Kansas Classic in second with 786 points, 405 points behind Kansas. After strong performances on the weekend, Lucia Rizzo and Brinley Horras were named to the Kansas Classic All-Invite team.
Firing off into finals, Brinley Horras strayed from competitors 1250 yards into the mile to lead by nearly half a pool length. Never faltering from the path to first, Horras touched with 16:57.09, adding the second all-time top time in the event to her name.
Sydney Jackson (17:15.37, 4th), Rundell (17:21.94, 6th), Keely Tierney (17:31.52, 9th), and Mallory Miller (17:34.55, 11th) rounded out the distance contingency to take the majority of the top-11 mile times.
Rundell took first in her heat to hit her all-time PR in the mile, crushing her previous mark set over four years ago.
Winter Craig nailed down a win in the 200 fly, sealing 2:01.95 to improve to the fourth-best performer in program history. Craig also recorded the 15th-fastest all-time Iowa State time.
Rizzo didn't tire from making her fourth swim in 'A' finals as she stopped the clock at 2:02.66 for third in the 200 fly. Rizzo ended the meet accumulating 58 points, the second-most by a swimmer of any team.
Ashley Bengtson proved to be a powerhouse in both sprint and distance events as she made her third appearance in championship finals through the events. Bengtson hit 51.07 for fifth, a PR good to name the sophomore Iowa State's No. 17 performer in the event.
Lehr Thorson and Martha Haas kept the momentum flowing as they notched themselves additional spots in the record books. Thorson swam to third overall in the 200 breast with 2:15.80 to tie the 18th-fastest Iowa State time ever. Martha Haas took possession of her third PR set in the meet (2:16.05, 5th) to improve her all-time performance standing from No. 9 to 8.
In all, swimmers set 18 lifetime bests and made 17 amends to the record books.
"Two winners, Brinley swimming the 1650 swam a smart race, went a little slower behind people and then just slingshotted past them," Head Coach Duane Sorenson. "Winter Craig toughed it out and gutted out the last 50 to win the 200 fly. Overall I thought our team really competed hard and with short rest. We're looking for bigger and better things."
