AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) faces off against Iowa (0-3, 0-2 Big Ten) on Friday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. as the Cyclones set eyes on their first victory since 2009. The Cyclones play host as the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series pays a visit to Beyer Pool.
THE OPPONENT- Iowa
Iowa holds the advantage over Iowa State with a series record of 31-14. The Cyclones came within 24 points of a victory in the 2018-19 season and most recently won in the 2009-10 season by a margin of 34. This season, Iowa has been handed losses by UNI and Big 10 foes Minnesota and Nebraska.Â
LAST TIME- Mizzou Invite and Kansas Classic
Michelle Schlossmacher Smith dove to three finals appearances at the Mizzou Invitational, bringing in 38 points for the Cyclones. The senior finalized three seventh-place finishes and added a three-meter Zone-qualifying mark; 80 percent of her season performances have resulted in a Zone cut in the event.
The swimmers brought home second out of six teams with 786 points at the Kansas Classic. Lucia Rizzo inched her way up the all-time point scorers list with each of her 'A' finals finishes as she is currently the 15th-highest point scorer in history.Â
WHAT TO WATCH FOR- Season Time Drops, Score ImprovementsÂ
The Cyclones look to continue improving times and scores against the Hawkeyes. In the last outing, sprinters set all top-five 50 free season times below 24 seconds, a feat that hasn't been attained at this point in the season before. Winter Craig recorded a steep time drop in the 200 fly, setting a new season best by nearly four seconds. Breaststrokers also topped season bests by several seconds, including Lehr Thorson's 200 breast season improvement by 6.45 seconds. With Thorson's 200 breast finish, the senior tallied her 400th career point.
Divers cemented numerous Zone cuts in their last dual appearance, including Joscelyn Buss' first career qualifying score. The sophomore scored 289.85 on the one-meter, the second-best mark by a Cyclone this season and a score of .46 from breaking into the top-10 all-time performance list. The score sits just behind Jayna Misra's 291.65 also set in the Omaha dual, where Misra went on to record the sixth-best three-meter performance in Cyclone history of 314.40.Â
