DES MOINES, Iowa – It was another star-studded day for the Iowa State track and field teams at the Drake Relays, as the Cyclone men returned to Ames with two more event titles and the 2021 Men's Relays Cup. The Cyclone men claimed the title in the distance medley relay, with the same crew that broke the 4x800m relay record yesterday of Jason Gomez, Roshon Roomes, Daniel Nixon and Festus Lagat doing the job today. Meanwhile, Leonel Perez got the event win in the open men's 800-meter run.
The No. 14 Iowa State men defended their Relays Cup with 32 points, getting maximum points for wins in the DMR, 4x800 and sprint medley relay across the past two days. The ISU women finished tied with North Dakota State in the Women's Relay Cup standings with 24 points, but the Bison got the trophy on a tiebreaker.
In the men's DMR, Roomes got the stick from Gomez with the Cyclones in third after 1,200, but the senior blew out the field with a 47.08 400m split to have ISU in a tie with Oklahoma State at the second exchange. Nixon split 1:50.03 for his 800 to have ISU in a close second behind Miami (OH) to hand off to Lagat for the 1,600m leg. The pace slowed meaning it would be a kickers race, with Lagat among a pack of six at the bell lap.
Lagat was looking for space entering the backstretch when an opportunity opened up due to a collision in front of him, allowing him to burst through and into the lead. Miami's Sean Torpy and Air Force's Sam Gillman took their chance against Lagat, but like he has many times Lagat had the kick to beat everyone and take the victory in 9:42.12, running the final lap in 54.72.
Iowa State defended its distance medley relay crown, and for the third time (1991, 2019) won both the 4x800 and DMR at the same Drake Relays. The Cyclone men also became the first men's squad since Kansas in 1954 to win the 4x800, DMR and SMR at the same Drake Relays.
After Joe Schaefer paced the first lap of the men's 800m in 55.08, the field prepared for a battle to the finish with nine battling for the win in the lead pack. Alex Lomong was among those battling at the front, but it was Leonel Perez, who was not even on either of ISU's 4x800 teams yesterday, who was able to battle ahead from the outside and hold off the pack to take the win in 1:50.79.
For the Cyclone women, it was about consistency across events, as the ISU women were the only team to have four top-four finishes in relay events this weekend at Drake. In the DMR, it did take some star power to get back up the field, as All-American Cailie Logue was given the baton in seventh but battled her way up the field and into fourth with a 4:39.65 anchor to give ISU fourth in 11:21.33, the sixth-fastest DMR in school history with Logue joined by Madelynn Hill, Bria Barnes and Maggie Davis.
ISU went all-in on the women's 4x400m relay, choosing to pull Kaylyn Hall out of the 100m hurdles final to have her at full strength for the relay. The team of Barnes, Zakiyah Amos, Erika Furbeck and Hall gave their best, posting a two-second season-best of 3:41.66 to finish third, but NDSU's fifth-place finish was enough to help them secure the Relays Cup for the women.
In the field, Vlad Pavlenko had a strong set of throws en route to taking second in the men's hammer throw. The All-American's first three throws were all over 66 meters, with his best coming on his second throw of 219-6 (66.90m). In the women's hammer throw, Antonella Creazzola had her best throw as a Cyclone, posting a 185-8 (56.61m) to finish 10th and enter ISU's all-time top-10 in the process.
