AMES, Iowa – The road to Eugene and the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships goes through the NCAA West Preliminaries next weekend at Texas A&M and the Cyclones will be well represented with 22 entries, which were announced Thursday. The No. 9 ISU men will have 18 entries, while the Cyclone women have four.
A big question buzzing around the track and field world would be what Wesley Kiptoo's path be going forward after his wins in the steeplechase, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. His path will be in the 5K/10K double, as he is the No. 4 seed in the 10,000m which will be run on Wednesday at 9:10 p.m. and the No. 3 seed in the 5,000m next Friday at 8:30 p.m. He will be joined in the 10,000m by teammates Edwin Kurgat (No. 5 seed) and Thomas Pollard (No. 23 seed). Fur Kurgat, this is a different event than his past two NCAA Outdoor Championships efforts in which he had focused on and eventually got First Team All-America honors in the 5,000m. For Pollard, this is the next stage of a long road back, as his last NCAA West Prelims appearance came in 2017, also in the 10K.
Joining Kiptoo in the 5,000m will be Ezekiel Rop, the No. 29 seed for the event, his first career trip to the Preliminarily round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Despite being minus Kiptoo in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the Cyclones will still be well represented in the form of David Too, the No. 9 seed, and No. 23 seed Gable Sieperda. Too was a 2019 West Prelims qualifier in the 10,000m, while Sieperda is a first-time qualifier.
The Cyclones have one of the biggest single-event contingents in the field in the men's 800-meter run, with five entries in the top-15 in the form of Festus Lagat (No. 3), Daniel Nixon (No. 10), Alex Lomong (No. 12), Roshon Roomes (No. 14) and Jason Gomez (No. 15). Lagat and Roomes qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2019 at 800m, while Lomong and Nixon have previously both made it this far at their previous school in the NCAA East Preliminaries, Lomong in 2017 and 2018 for Ohio State and Nixon in 2018 at Mississippi State. This will be Gomez's first NCAA West Prelims trip.
Roomes will also be looking for a third trip to the National Championships in the 4x400m relay, with the team of Roomes, Eric Fogltanz, Gage Clay and Cebastian Gentil earning the No. 19 seed with last weekend's run at the Big 12 Championships. Fogltanz, who was also part of the 4x400 that made it to the NCAA Championships in 2018 and 2019, will also be looking for a third-straight trip in the 400-meter hurdles, in which he is the No. 23 seed.
In the field for the Iowa State men, Vlad Pavlenko will be looking for a repeat trip to the National Championships, he is seeded No. 4 in the men's hammer throw. While Scott Fuchs' huge silver-medal effort in the men's javelin at the conference championships saw him shoot up to the No. 7 seed. Kevin Sakson qualified in a pair of events, with the Estonian checking in as the No. 18 seed in the discus and No. 46 in the shot put. Both Fuchs and Sakson are making their first NCAA West Prelims trips.
For the Iowa State women, Big 12 5K/10K champion Cailie Logue will be focusing her energy in the 10,000m run next Thursday, in which she is the No. 10 seed. Logue's previous two trips to West Prelims in 2018 and 2019 saw her focus on the 5,000m. The Cyclones have two in the women's 3,000m steeplechase in Abby Caldwell (No. 21 seed) and Janette Schraft (No. 37 seed). Caldwell is making her third NCAA West Prelims trip (2015 & 2019), while Schraft is a first-time qualifier.
Rounding out the field is ISU's school-record holder in the discus, Emily March. Her school record mark of 191-2 (58.27m) at Kansas three weeks ago earned her the No. 6 seed.
The top-12 in each event at the West Preliminaries will advance to the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
