Ames, Iowa – Former Cyclone star Denzel Ieremia, is making his first start on the European Tour this week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
The championship is a four-round pro-am event with two rounds played at St. Andrews, one at Carnoustie and one at Kingsbarns.
Ieremia earned his ticket into the event after an impressive top-10 finish on the PGA Tour Australasia money list. He competed in seven events this season, compiling over $100,000 in earnings.
In preparation for the championship, Ieremia has been practicing in Ames. Golf in Iowa has many similarities to Scotland and has allowed Ieremia to build up confidence and put together a game plan as he heads overseas.
"It has been good here in Ames. I have used the facility here, which is just great, and then The Harvester," said Ieremia. "Obviously, it will be pretty windy in Scotland, and it is always windy here. I have been really working on knocking my ball-flight down and getting used to playing in the wind."
With names like Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and the defending champion Victor Perez in field this week, preparation will be key to success.
Iowa State's Golf Performance Center has many different features that allows golfers to hit any shot they can imagine. Ieremia has used those features to his advantage.
"I think we have the best facility in the country," stated Ieremia. "The Harvester is probably the best course in Iowa. As a young professional golfer, it kind of has everything we need to hone our skills, and it has been nice and comfortable for me."
Not only is Ieremia sharpening his skills with the facilities, but he has also been competing against some of the current Cyclone golfers.
"It has been good, nice to see the boys develop. I love competition, so it's always good to compete with the younger guys," commented Ieremia. "I think it is good for me because I get to play against a lot of them, and then it is good for them because they get to see an older player who is still playing. I think for both sides it is great."
Ieremia will look forward to the great competition this week. Three legendary courses in one week, what an experience for the young professional.
