AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (8-1, 2-0 Big 12) trails Kansas (2-2, 0-0 Big 12) by a score of 95-55 after the first day. Martha Haas became an all-time point scorer while Michelle Schlossmacher Smith and Joscelyn Buss dove to personal records in the action.
Emily Haan, Haas, Carley Caughron and Maddie Ziegert came together with 1:43.42 for second in the 200 medley relay to start the dual. The race was decided by .03 seconds as Iowa State and Kansas sprinted alongside each other throughout.
Brinley Horras touched at 10:16.80 with the first Cyclone victory in the 1000 free. The sophomore built her lead with every stride as she hit the wall 7.16 seconds before Kansas. The finish tallied her 155th point this season and moves her onto the all-time sophomore point scorers list at No. 16.
Martha Haas officially notched all-time point scorer status next in the 100 breast after entering the meet .5 points away. The senior nailed down second with 1:03.54 to now sit at No. 20 on the list.
Lucia Rizzo and Kansas' Amelie Lessing stopped the clock with identical 200 fly times of 2:04.05 to split top points. Following the event, the Cyclones trailed the Jayhawks by a margin of 26.
In one-meter diving, Schlossmacher Smith and Buss both amended the record book while solidifying new PRs. Schlossmacher Smith totaled a score of 308.93, the seventh-highest in Iowa State history. Buss dove to 291.98 to make her the 10th-best performer all-time.
Jayna Misra made her first return to the boards since the Omaha dual with a Zone-qualifying performance. The junior's score of 273.45 tallied the 25th Zone cut by a Cyclone on the season.
"Time-wise, we're swimming really well," Head Coach Duane Sorenson said. "We just have to get our hand on the wall because KU has been touching us out in a lot of close races, but pleased with the effort and attitude."
Competition continues tomorrow with the 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 500 free, 100 fly, three-meter diving, 200 IM and the 400 free relay. Senior recognition will begin at 9:45 a.m.
