EUGENE, Oregon – Jason Gomez got Iowa State on the board at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with his fourth-place and First Team All-America personal best effort in the men's 800-meter run Friday night at Hayward Field. Gomez moved up five spots on the final lap to get to his final position of fourth and run to a new personal best.
In addition, Kevin Sakson in the discus and Ryan Ford in the 5,000-meter run each collected Honorable Mention All-America honors, Sakson finishing 20th with a best throw on the day of 179-5 (54.68m) and Ford taking 21st in 13:50.03.
Gomez's five team points means the Cyclone men finished tied for 50th in the team standings.
Like he did on Wednesday in the prelims, Gomez took his time getting into the action, sitting in ninth of the nine-man field after 500 meters. Once again, he made a move on the backstretch, but was still seventh with about 150 meters to go. Gomez was able to turn it on in the final 100 meters to get past a couple more competitors and hold off Villanova's Season Dolan for fourth by 0.04 seconds in 1:46.34.
Gomez became a First Team All-American for the third time in his Iowa State career, the second time in 2022 (he led off for ISU's sixth place DMR indoors) and the first time outdoors. His time of 1:46.34 is also a personal best and moves him up to No. 5 in ISU history in the event.
Kevin Sakson marked his first trip to the NCAA Championships with a 20th place finish in the men's discus competition, recording a best throw on the day of 179-5 (54.68m) and finished with Honorable Mention All-America honors. The Estonians best throw came on his first throw, as he followed that up with a second throw effort of 175-5 (53.47m) and a foul on his final attempt.
For Ryan Ford, he was content with sitting at the very back of the pack for the first 3,000 meters, comfortable with the place that was being set ahead of him. He was able to move up to 21st with four laps to go, and that was where he would end up finishing, taking 21st in 13:50.03. Ford marked his final race as a Cyclone and first trip to the NCAA Championships with Honorable Mention All-America distinction.
