LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State took home two Big 12 titles and reset two school records to begin Big 12 Indoor Championships.
Cam Jones took down his own school record on the way to securing the first weight throw Big 12 title in Iowa State history. The sophomore hit the mark of 76-4 1/4 (23.27m) to sit atop the leaderboard, setting the current No. 2-ranking mark in the nation. Jones threw over 70 feet in five of six rounds.
Sydney Willits claimed the second Big 12 title of the day, with hers coming in the long jump. The sophomore notched 20-9 1/4 (6.33m) on her second jump and remained in the lead the rest of the way. The finish moves Willits up to fourth on the ISU all-time list and ranks T-No. 18 in the nation this season. The title is Iowa State's first in the long jump since Jhoanmy Luque did so in 2018 and is the fifth indoor women's long jump title in program history.
Freshman Rachel Joseph also had a school record, breaking the 400-meter dash record for the third time this season, this time resetting it to 52.92. Joseph became the first in indoor program history to go sub-53 seconds while finishing third in preliminaries to earn another run tomorrow in finals.
Cailie Logue secured the silver medal in the 5,000m run while Dana Feyen took fifth to bring in 12 team points. On the men's side of the 5,000m, Gable Sieperda, Kelvin Bungei and Chad Johnson medaled to secure points.
Rebecca Manteuffel also brought in points with her seventh-place weight throw mark of 61-11 3/4 (18.89m).
After the first day, the women sit in fourth with 30 points and the men in fifth with 24.
Kaylyn Hall finished second overall in 60m hurdle prelims, automatically qualifying for finals tomorrow. Hall clocked 8.19 to move up to tie the third-fastest time in program history. Katarina Vlahovic notched seventh with 8.40 to also take possession of a spot in finals.
Three claimed their spot in the men's 1,000m run as freshman Emanuel Galdino led the Cyclones with a third-place finish in prelims with 2:22.66 (No. 9 in Iowa State history). Nehemia Too crossed the line fourth in 2:22.72 while current school-record holder Jason Gómez clocked 2:23.15 for seventh.
In the 800m, Peter Smith and Cebastian Gentil clocked men's finals qualifying times while Kinsey Christianson qualified for the women. Darius Kipyego timed in .26 seconds off a qualifying time.
Kiersten Fisher and Kailynn Gubbels competed for the Cyclones in the pentathlon, finishing 10th and 12th respectively. Fisher brought in 3,560 points, a new personal best by over 200 to set the eighth-highest total in ISU history.
The heptathlon began with Thai Thompson putting up a new 60m dash personal record of 7.00 while finishing fourth in the event. Following the first day of the heptathlon with four events completed, Thompson sits in fifth with 2,936 points and Jack Vetsch in sixth with 2,833. Events to come tomorrow are 60m hurdles, pole vault and the 1,000m run.
Day one closed with the men taking second in the DMR with 9:35.49 and the women in third with 11:26.72. The women's finish is the ninth-fastest in school history.
Big 12 Indoor Championships continue tomorrow at 11 a.m. with multi events.
