Cyclones Post Personal Bests in Day Two

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State continued the Drake Relays, with runners posting fast times and numerous personal bests.
In the unseeded 800m run, Makayla Clark nearly beat Bradley's Trixie Wraith to the finish line, but was edged by .21 seconds to claim second with 2:08.33.
Next up came the unseeded men's 800m where James Olivier, running unattached, blazed to a new personal best of 1:48.45 to win the event. Olivier cut over a second off his previous PR of 1:49.63 set at the Bryan Clay Invitational two weeks ago.
Tyler Carreon joined in claiming a PR, going sub-1:50 for the first time in his career with 1:49.72 to place sixth. Iowa State has now had six Cyclones turn in sub-1:50 times this outdoor season.
Two steeplechasers ran to best marks as Kelvin Bungei led the Cyclones with a 3,000m steeplechase time of 8:49.31 for eighth, just .51 seconds off the 10th-fastest in ISU history. Quinton Orr broke nine minutes for the first time with his PR of 8:57.46, claiming 13th.
Later on in the night, Madelynn Hill crushed her personal best in the 5,000m by nearly 46 seconds. Hill's time of 16:13.42 came just over four seconds shy of No. 10-ranking time in school history as she cemented 11th.
Thai Thompson and Jack Vetsch entered day two competing throughout decathlon events. Vetsch began his day with the 110m hurdle victory, claiming it with a wind-aided 14.78. Thompson put up an outdoor best while matching his overall PR in the pole vault, clearing 14-9 (4.50m) to place second.
The Drake Relays continue tomorrow, while the throws squad will also compete at the Kip Janvrin Open.
