AMES, Iowa – Iowa State took 12 event titles, set five top-10 ranked program marks while Darius Kipyego took down the 1,000-meter run school record to close the Cyclone Open.
Kipyego etched his name in both the Iowa State and all-time collegiate record books with his 1,000m run time of 2:18.53. Kipyego moved up from No. 8 (2:21.85) to take the top spot in program history while also handing in the third-fastest time in collegiate history. The time topped Jason Gómez' record of 2:19.11 set in 2021.
In the 600-yard run, Iowa State swept both titles with Makayla Clark clocking the top time of 1:20.70 for the women and James Olivier 1:11.70 for the men. Clark now ranks as the fourth-fastest Cyclone all time in the event.
Rachel Joseph made her presence known in her season debut, recording the sixth-fastest 200m program performance with 24.60, just .01 behind first in the event. The sophomore also handed in a 60m personal record with 7.77.
Jack Latham and Alec Carr lit up the track in the 60-meter hurdle final, going out to sub-eight second times and all-time program performances. The duo posted the top two times as Latham stopped the clock at 7.90 and Carr at 7.94. Latham moved up a spot to No. 7 all time while Carr tied the No. 8-ranking time.
For the women, Sydney Willits and Kiersten Fisher joined in taking the top two spots for the women, with Willits clocking 8.63 and Fisher 8.71.
The mile on both the men's and women's side saw numerous personal bests as Silas Winders took the win, lowering his PR once again to 4:01.35. Gable Sieperda claimed third with a best time of 4:03.79 while three additional men posted PRs. Janette Schraft was the top ISU finisher taking second for the women in 4:49.44. Cyclone women claimed second through fifth as freshman McKinley Wheeler (4:49.49), Bella Heikes (4:49.62, PR) and Brenna Cohoon (4:50.01, PR) crossed the finish line.
All three women's shot putters matched or set a new best mark, while the duo of Betty Rosvold (47-7, 14.50m, PR) and Ella O'Neall (47-3 1/2, 14.41m T-PR) put up the top two marks in the event. Multi-event athlete Sydney Willits took eighth with her new best of 35-9 1/2 (10.91m). Kevin Sakson hit a season best while winning it for the men with 60-4 (18.39m) and Blake Veenstra and Daniel Norris placed next to cement first through third for ISU.
Other event winners included Said Mechaal in the 3,000m who broke eight minutes with 7:59.35, less than two seconds off a top-10 ISU performance. Riley Beach took the win in the women's 800m with a PR of 2:10.56, and Jack Noble cleared a new best of 6-6 3/4 (2.00) for the high jump victory. The Cyclone Open closed with the 4x400m women's squad of Joseph, Bria Barnes, Clark and Cameron Moon finishing first in 3:45.76.
In the weight throw, Ella O'Neall took second for the ISU women with a new personal best of 55-10 1/4 (17.02m) while Daniel Norris was the top men's Cyclone placer in third (67-0 1/2, 20.43m).
New Balance Collegiate Showdown
In Boston, Cam Jones competed in the shot put and weight throw among some of the nation's best. In the shot put, Jones put up an indoor best of 61-7 1/2 (18.78m) to place third. Jones improves his mark at No. 5 in ISU history and currently ranks at No. 9 in the nation. The winner of the event, Alexander Kolesnikoff of Georgia, set the nation led. In the weight throw, Jones cemented second with 68-7 (20.91m).
Next up, Iowa State will head to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Razorback Invitational Jan. 26-27.
