AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-3, 0-1 Big 12) will travel to Morgantown to participate in their first double dual of the 2023-24 season against West Virginia (0-3, 0-1 Big 12) and Villanova (3-2-1, 2-0 Big East). The meet will take place at 11 a.m. EST at the Mylan Aquatic Park.Â
THE OPPONENT - West VirginiaÂ
Iowa State holds a 6-3 all-time record against West Virginia. The Cyclones lost the last matchup 157-142 at home as part of a three-team dual that also included the UNI Panthers. Iowa State is 3-2 against West Virginia when the meet has been held in Morgantown.Â
The Mountaineers haven't found much luck in dual meets over the 2023-24 season with non-conference losses against Penn State and Pittsburgh, along with a Big 12 loss to new member Cincinnati.Â
However, West Virginia has shown the ability to put together strong results this season, including a first-place finish at the WVU Invitational out of 16 women's teams that attended.Â
THE OPPONENT - VillanovaÂ
The Cyclones have a 1-2 record against Villanova but won their last matchup against the Wildcats 150-145 in 2022. All three contests between the two programs have come at Mylan Aquatic Park as part of a three-team dual with West Virginia.Â
Villanova started their 2023-24 campaign strong with two dual meet wins against Big East schools Connecticut and Georgetown. Villanova has suffered two dual meet losses this season, including a 199-99 loss at Rutgers, a team Iowa State faced and scored more points against at the Hawkeye Invite earlier this season.Â
LAST TIME - TCUÂ
The Cyclones started slow out of the gates against TCU but found their footing in the second half of the meet, including wins in four out of the last five events.Â
Senior Brinley Horras secured the No. 19 position in the all-time points leaderboard with a first-place finish in the 500 free. Freshman Emma Kuhn won the 200 IM while finishing in second-place in both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events. Seniors Andie Quirke and Winter Craig added to their season totals with respective wins in the 100 free and 200 fly.Â
In diving, Kate Mitchell set a new personal best of 294.15 on the 3-meter board and was one of three Cyclones to secure a zone diving cut in the event.Â
Lauren Kimball led the way for the Cyclones in 1-meter diving with a score of 300.20, placing her at No. 8 in the all-time top performers list for the event.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR - Diving and Distance FreestyleÂ
In the three dual meet victories for the Cyclones this season, the team has won both diving events along with the 500 and 1000 free events in each meet. That pattern will have to follow on Saturday to win the three-team dual.Â
Horras will look to continue her climb on the points leaderboard but Corinne Guist will be one to watch in the distance events with top two finishes in her last two 500 free events and a win in her last 1000 free swim.Â
In diving, Kimball will continue to lead the way in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Kimball has joined elite company with her performances this season and holds a spot in both all-time top performers lists for 1-meter and 3-meter diving.Â
ON DECK - KansasÂ
The Cyclones will close out their 2023-24 home slate with a two day meet at Beyer Pool against Kansas. Saturday, Feb. 10 will be Senior Day and events to honor our seniors will be held before the meet starts at 10 a.m. CT.
