Gene Miranda Falcon Invite

09.09.2007 | Men's Golf
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? The Iowa State men's golf team captured first place in its second consecutive tournament in as many tries, coming from behind with a tournament-low 283 today to tie for first at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Cyclones tied for first with Wichita State with a 54-hole total of 852, the third best team score in Cyclone history.
“Our seniors have worked hard for four years and it is great to see them play like they are capable of,” ISU head coach Jay Horton said. “From top to bottom, our whole team is playing with a lot of confidence.”
Chris Baker fell short of winning medalist honors in his second-straight tournament, finishing second four strokes behind Wichita State's Ryan Spears. Baker, a senior from Brownstown, Ind., fired a 72 today to finish the tournament at 207 (66-69-72), the fourth-best 54-hole score in school history.
“Chris' start to this season is phenomenal,” Horton said. “He has shot in the 60s in three of five rounds and his worst score of the year has been a 72. He made the switch to a belly putter in the summer and it has really helped him with his confidence.”
Two other seniors were instrumental in ISU's success this weekend. Cedric Bertin, a native of Bruz, France, finished third behind a career-best 66 this afternoon. Bertin's round was aided by an eagle on the par-4 No. 2. Bertin's three-round tally of 210 (75-69-66) was the lowest of his career. Joe Cermak also had a solid day on the course, firing a final round of 70 to help him to his eighth career top-10 finish with a 214 (73-71-70).
Freshman Nathan Leary, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, saw his first action as a Cyclone, competing individually and finishing in the top 20 with a total of 218 (72-74-72).
The Cyclones return to action in three weeks and will head to Richmond, Va. for the VCU Mattaponi Springs Shootout.
