Golfers Take First Place at Big Four

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men's golf team earned state bragging rights and gained valuable momentum heading into their spring season by winning the Big Four in Chandler, Arizona in an exhibition between ISU, Iowa, Northern Iowa and Drake this past weekend.

The Iowa State squad edged Northern Iowa in the opening round by way of the lower team score tie-breaker after match-play ended 3.5 to 3.5. First round winners for ISU included Tom Lathrop, Nate McCoy and Nathan Leary, with Mike Wuertz earning a draw. The win set up an Iowa-Iowa State duel for the title.

Ben Herrera, Nate McCoy and Mike Wuertz were victorious for ISU with the round again ending in a stalemate, this time 3 to 3. Iowa State once again boasted the lower overall team score to break the tie, this time paced by Herrera's sparkling 64 on the par 71 course.

The Cyclones start their spring season at the UTSA Road Runner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas Feb. 15.
