AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team will begin their historic 100th season ranked No. 13 in the NWCA/ USA Today Coach's Poll. The Cyclones are coming off of an 11-2 record a season ago, the best since Kevin Jackson's first year at Iowa State in 2010.
Coach Jackson will have to do without a pair of seniors from the 2014-15 team in National Champion Kyven Gadson and two-time All-American Michael Moreno.
“You don't replace guys like Kyven Gadson and Michael Moreno,” Jackson said. “You don't replace those guys over night.”
Even with the departure of Gadson and Moreno, Jackson feels that his team is in a good position to compete. With some new faces taking on bigger roles and Lelund Weatherspoon and Tanner Weatherman bumping down a weight class, Jackson likes the way his line-up looks for 2015-16.
“We don't feel we lost a whole lot because of the redshirts we have stepping up and Lelund and Tanner moving down,” Jackson said.
Iowa State opens it season in Blacksburg, Virginia next Saturday afternoon. They'll take on the No. 6 Virginia Tech Hokies at Noon at Cassell Coliseum.
