AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field teams picked up 12 event wins Saturday at the Big 4 Duals at the Lied Recreation Center. The fans surrounding Harry Hoak track saw many outstanding performances, with a star being born in the sprints.
Being a dual competition, Iowa State went 3-0 on both the men's and women's sides. The men defeated Drake 104-61, Iowa 85-78 and UNI 85-79. The women took down Drake 96-62, Iowa 91-68 and UNI 92-73.
Freshman Kate Hall came to Iowa State with plenty of hype, a 26-time Maine High School state champion and the national high school record holder in the long jump. On the track, she gave fans a glimpse of that promise. She won her prelim heat of the 60-meter dash with ease in 7.40. In the final, Hall was up against bigger competition in the form of Iowa's Lake Kwaza. But it was the Cyclone who prevailed, making a late pass to take the win in a personal best 7.30, the second-fastest time in ISU history.
Hall also picked up a win in the long jump, with her mark of 20-2 1/4 ranking sixth in Cyclone history.
Another freshman who stood out was Jasmine Staebler. After picking up two wins at the Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska last week, she was first to cross the line again, this time in the 800-meter run, clocking a 2:10.19. Right behind her was another freshman in Erinn Stenman-Fahey, with the Canadian clocking a 2:10.59.
On the men's side, there were plenty of strong performances to go around for the Cyclones. ISU picked up wins in both distance events, with a veteran, redshirt junior Brian Llamas, guiding ISU in the mile in 4:04.29. In the 3,000-meter run, redshirt freshman Nathan Rodriguez crossed the line first in 8:16.74.
Other event winners on the men's side were Chandler Diercks in the long jump (23-1 3/4), Jalen Ford in the high jump (6-8 3/4) and, in his ISU debut, Alexandru Mitirica in the triple jump (48-9 1/2). Other Cyclone women who took first included Evelyne Guay in the mile (4:49.88), Alyssa Gonzalez in the 600-yard run (1:22.68), and Christina Hillman in the shot put (55-11).
