Sanderson Resets ISU Record in Heptathlon
01.30.2016 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Iowa State saw its second school record fall in as many days as Taylor Sanderson reset his own school record in the men's heptathlon Saturday at the Razorback Invitational. Sanderson shattered his previous record of 5,479 points by 140 points, finishing fifth with 5,619 points.
In the team competition, the Iowa State women finished seventh with 44 team points. The Iowa State men completed the weekend in ninth place with 32.20 points. Arkansas claimed the team title on both the men's and women's sides on their home track.
After posting three personal bests on the first day of the heptathlon competition, Sanderson picked up right where he left off. After a solid 8.38 in the 60-meter hurdles, the senior put together a big personal record in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 14-1 1/4, surpassing 14 feet for the first time in his career, indoors or outdoors. Needing just a 2:56 in the 1,000 to break his heptathlon school record, Sanderson made sure he got the record the right way, with his fifth personal best of the weekend. Sanderson crossed the line in fourth in 2:42.95, cutting almost two seconds off his previous best time in the event.
He closed out the meet in fifth place with a score of 5,619 points, beating his previous mark, which he set at last season's Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, by 140 points.
Iowa State swept the 3,000-meter runs to start the track events on Saturday. On the women's side, the Cyclones took three of the top four spots, with Abby Caldwell cross the line first in 9:45.35 and Kelly Naumann right behind her in 9:45.66. Anne Frisbie took fourth in 9:46.12. For the men, it was Dan Curts who was able to battle ahead and take the victory in 8:20.02.
For the second weekend in a row, Christina Hillman picked up a win in the shot put, taking the victory with a toss of 55-7 3/4. The two-time national champion and six-time All-American got her winning throw in round two and held a lead of over 18 inches after three throws. While Hillman was unable to improve on her winning toss, she was able to hold on to the win, with Oklahoma State's Chase Ealey coming closest to getting her with a toss of 55-6 1/4.
Another notable performance in the field came from triple jumper Alexandru Mitirica. The Romanian, who enrolled at Iowa State in January, finished the men's triple jump competition with a bang, jumping 52-4 3/4 to get second place in the meet. Mitirica now ranks fifth in Iowa State history in the indoor triple jump.
Other Cyclones to break into ISU's all-time top 10 include Christian DeLago in the men's mile (seventh in ISU history, 4:00.97), Evelyne Guay in the women's 800-meter run (tied for ninth, 2:08.81), Jhoanmy Luque in the women's triple jump (second, 42-2 3/4) and Brandon Wheat in the men's 800-meter run (ninth, 1:50.37).
