AMES, Iowa – A pair of silver medals highlighted day one for Iowa State at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Lied Recreation Center. Daniel Everett took second in the men's 5,000-meter run and Kate Hall led an ISU 2-3 finish in the women's long jump.
On the men's side, Daniel Everett was part of a dramatic finish in the men's 5,000-meter run. The redshirt senior, in his Big 12 Championship debut, was in the front of the pack for most of the race, but let his fellow competitors take the workload off of him late on. That set up a three-man showdown between Everett, Cerake Geberkidane of Oklahoma State and Benard Keter of Texas Tech. Keter led on the final turn for home, but could not hold off the hard-charging Geberkidane on the outside. Everett took advantage of the move to dip inside and sneak past Keter for second by 0.04 seconds.
Also scoring for the Cyclone men on was the distance medley relay team of Brandon Wheat, Deon Sanders, Jacob Aune and Dan Curts, who took fourth with a time of 9:55.25, and Chris Celona in the weight throw, who recorded a personal best toss of 57-0.
The Cyclone women showed their prowess in the long jump, with ISU's duo of Kate Hall and Jhoanmy Luque taking second and third, respectively. Hall was behind Luque going into her final jump, but surpassed her with a leap of 21-1 1/2. The Venezuelan Luque's best effort was her second jump, which checked in at a personal best of 20-10 3/4, which would move her to 12th nationally in the event.
The Cyclone women also showed well in the women's 5,000-meter run. Perez Rotich bounced back from a challenging 5K at the Iowa State Classic to earn the bronze medal in third with a 16:21.24. Her teammate Erin Hooker also got ISU on the board with a fifth-place 16:25.25. Also scoring for the ISU women on Friday was the distance medley relay team of Jasmine Staebler, Emma Whigham, Erinn Stenman-Fahey and Evelyne Guay, which took fifth in 11:40.48.
Despite not enjoying as many personal bests as he did en route to his school record at the Razorback Invitational, Sanderson is still going strong with the lead in the heptathlon with one day to go. The senior kicked off the day with a best in the 60-meter dash in 7.07. While not reaching his peaks of earlier in the season, eh was still able to keep the competition at bay with a second place finish in the long jump (23-0 3/4) and tying for first in the shot put (42-1 1/2). He closed his heptathlon day on a big note, taking second in the men's high jump with a best leap of 6-6.
Sanderson added to that with a trip to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, taking seventh place in prelims with a time of 8.25. He will be joined by Elijah Young, who took eighth in 8.31.
Between the men's and women's teams, the Cyclones have a combined 12 runners who earned Saturday runs in the prelims today. Among the highlights was Kate Hall winning her heat of the women's 60-meter dash in a time of 7.33, her second-fastest mark of the season. In the women's 1,000-meter run, Maddie Nagle posted a time of 2:51.82 moving her into ISU's all-time top-10 for the event.
