AMES, Iowa – For the first time in 2017, the Iowa State track and field team comes to the friendly confines of the Lied Recreation Athletic Center for competition. The Cyclones will be hosting the 26th annual Iowa State Classic this weekend.
Action on Friday begins with field events at 11 a.m., running events at noon before a short break prior to the invitational 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday events begin on the track and in the field at noon. To see the full schedule of events, click here.
Admission to the meet is free. All competition will be shown on FloTrack via its subscription-based FloPro service. For more information, click here. Live results will be provided by PrimeTime Timing, here.
The Iowa State Classic produced 20 NCAA Indoor Championships qualifiers last season, including half the field in the men's 5,000-meter run. The event also featured multiple facility records and an NCAA record during the two-days in 2016, and more of the same is expected in 2017.
The Iowa State men have shown improvement throughout the season, and will look to continue to make breakthroughs this weekend. The Cyclones have one of their top 4x400-meter relay teams in school history, with the 60-meter hurdles team of Logan Schneider and Elijah Young both having great seasons. The Cyclones will also look for big performances Friday night in the men's 3,000, with Kevyn Hoyos and Andrew Jordan slated to make their ISU track debuts after strong cross country seasons.
On the women's side, Iowa State has had a pair of elite performers this season in Jasmine Staebler and Jhoanmy Luque. Staebler, a sophomore, currently ranks 13th in the country in the 800-meter run and will have a chance to improve against a loaded women's 800 field that features seven of the top-13 in the 800 this season. Luque is No. 2 nationally in the triple jump, but will be focusing her efforts on the long jump this weekend.
