IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State men's golf team won the 2018 Hawkeye Invitational with a 36-hole mark of 583 (280-303). This is the Cyclones' second victory of the year and their second in the last three events.
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes because of poor weather conditions.
Heading into the final round, ISU held the 18-hole lead by two strokes after a first-round 280. Iowa State was able to hold off a late push by host Iowa and eventually topped the Hawkeyes by one stroke to claim the title.
In total, four Cyclones turned in top-15 performances, with senior Denzel Ieremia leading the pack. Ieremia (142) finished in fourth place and carded a final round score of 75 for his sixth top-10 finish this season and 12th of his collegiate career.
Just behind Ieremia was sophomore Tripp Kinney and freshman Lachlan Barker. Kinney and Barker (146) finished in a tie for sixth place. Kinney carded a final round score of 75, while Barker shot a final-round 76.
Sophomore Sam Vincent also had a good showing in Iowa City by finishing in a tie for 14th place at 149.
Since Andrew Tank took the reins of the ISU golf program, he has racked up nine tournament victories. This is the second time that his squad has been victorious at the Hawkeye Invitational.
The Cyclones will be back in action at the Big 12 Championship April 23-25 in Tulsa, Okla.
