STANFORD, California – Iowa State's track and field teams put up some impressive performances Saturday at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Stanford, and the Michael Johnson Invitational at Baylor. Iowa State's mid-distance crew highlighted the day's competition at Stanford, capping it off with a men's 4x400 relay win. Meanwhile, the women's field events and hurdlers put up some wins and top-10 performances in Waco.
Cardinal Classic
The highlight of the day at Cobb Track came from
Larkin Chapman in the women's 1,500, as she smashed her personal best in the event by seven seconds en route to finishing second in her section with a time of 4:20.62. Her effort saw her move up to No. 5 in program history for the event. In the invitational section of the 1,500,
Jasmine Staebler finished sixth in 4:19.91, just missing out on her personal best, but also going under 4:20 for the second-straight time at 1,500.
Closing out the meet, the men's 4x400 relay came home first, with the quartet of
Ka'ven Berry,
Frank Hayes,
Jaymes Dennison and
Roshon Roomes crossing in a meet-record 3:07.57. The relay squad ranks No. 8 in ISU history for the event, and are the fastest Cyclone outdoor 4x400 this century.
In the men's 400, Dennison clocked a personal best with his second-place finish in 46.90. Dennison's effort saw him break into ISU's all-time top-10 for the outdoor 400 at No. 9, also becoming the only Cyclone to rank in the men's program's top-10 at both 400 and 800 (sixth, 1:47.63) meters. Roomes was seventh in the 400 on Saturday, clocking in at 47.83
Michael Johnson Invitational
The Iowa State women had many impressive performances at Baylor on Saturday. ISU got a pair of wins in the field, the first coming from
Jhoanmy Luque in the long jump. The Cyclones' star jumper had the three best jumps of the competition, with her winning jump being her fifth effort with a wind-aided 20-7 3/4 (6.29m).
In the women's shot put open competition, freshman
Keiara Williams got the win with a season-best 46-11 3/4 (14.32m). Also in the field,
Essence Henderson had a 7-foot PR in the discus invite, taking third with her toss of 169-4 (51.62m).
On the track,
Tasha Frazier impressed in the women's 100-meter hurdles, taking ninth by tying her personal best at 13.81, a mark she set in her junior college days. Frazier's effort moved her to No. 6 in Iowa State's all-time top-10 for the 100 hurdles. In the 400 hurdles,
Emma Whigham continued her impressive progress, taking eighth with a personal best of 1:01.50.
Up Next
Iowa State will stay in-state next week for the 2018 Drake Relays in Des Moines. Competition will begin on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., with events continuing on Friday and Saturday.
