LINCOLN, Neb. – The Iowa State Cyclones (0-1) fell in their regular season opener to the Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-0), 151-149. The score marks the closest Iowa State has come within a win since 2013, where Iowa State and Nebraska tied. The competition was neck-and-neck, with three lead changes throughout the dual.
The first event victory went to the Cyclones as Iowa State continued its success in relay events against Nebraska. The squad of Emily Haan, Martha Haas, Wyli Erlechman and Elynn Tan touched with a time of 1:25.10. The team of Sophia Goushchina, Lehr Thorson, Trinity Gilbert and Emma Sass came in third to put the Cyclones at an early lead of 13-4.
In the 200 free, Keely Soellner and Anna Andersen secured second and third place, respectively. Soellner's time of 1:53.66 came in just .96 seconds behind first.
Heading into the 50 free, Nebraska held a 16-point lead over Iowa State. Tan, Goushchina and Emma Sass aided in closing the point gap by sweeping the event. The sweep brought the Cyclones within three points of the Huskers.
Three-meter diving proved to be a successful event, with Dana Liva leading competitors and Jayna Misra right behind taking second. Liva's score of 269.70 and Misra's 269.10 put the Cyclones ahead 77-73.
The widest lead of the meet was held by Nebraska, pulling ahead by 16 points. The Cyclones battled back with top finishes by Andersen in the 100 free and Haan in the 200 back which brought the Cyclones to an astounding 14 points ahead of the Cornhuskers.
Nebraska took charge in the 200 breast and 500 free to take the lead back. Nolwenn Nunes clocked in just .12 seconds behind first in the 500 free with a time of 5:03.48.
In one-meter diving, Michelle Schlossmacher Smith, Misra and Liva placed first, second and fourth, respectively, to turn a 13-point deficit into just two points.
Although Iowa State led competitors in the 400 free relay, Nebraska's lead held up through the final event. The squad of Tan, Andersen, Haan and Soellner touched first at 3:28.90. Haas, Goushchina, Nunes and Kennedy Tranel earned third with a time of 3:33.50.
DIVER OF THE MEET- Dana Liva
Liva's victory of 269.70 in three-meter diving was pivotal in changing the momentum of the meet. Not only did the win help change the lead in favor of the Cyclones, it set Iowa State on the path to their widest lead over Nebraska.
ON DECK
The Cyclones host St. Catherine University and Omaha on Oct. 25 in Beyer Pool's home opener. The meet will mark the first meeting between St. Catherine and Iowa State. The meet is to begin at 6 p.m. on homecoming week.
